China lifts towage restrictions
CHINA has opened its doors to foreign interests providing harbour towage services. Beibu Gulf Towing Co, a joint venture between Fangcheng Port Authority and South China Towing Co, began operations on 1 January. Among shareholders in South China Towing are Tokyo Kisen Co, one of the largest tug operators in Japan, and Mitsui OSK Lines. South China is the second largest towing company in Hong Kong and will now expand to provide towage services in Fangcheng and neighbouring ports in the Beibu Gulf. The new venture has three modern tugs and will acquire additional tugs "to meet the growing demand for towing services in the Beibu Gulf," MOL said in a statement.
