17:38:17 Smit, KPT close to Tasman deal
THERE are indications today that Karachi Port Trust is reaching an agreement with the American P&I Club, representing the owner of the tanker Tasman Spirit, regarding the wreck's removal. Representatives from the club's appointed salvor/wreck remover, Netherlands-based Smit, said earlier this month that they were ready to begin work as soon as they received assurances regarding the release of assets belonging to Greek salvor Tsavliris, together with the financial payment upfront. All other salvors have been reluctant to get involved while Tsavliris salvage master Nikos Pappas and seven members of the tanker's crew continue to be effectively held hostage in a five-star hotel in Karachi. Fairplay understands talks about the fate of Pappas, Capt Karystinos Demitrious and his crew are continuing.
