At least six crewmen were killed on Saturday after a South Korean
freighter, buffeted by strong winds and high waves, crashed into a
breakwater in northern Japan, officials said.
5,500-ton Marine Osaka was anchored off the island of Hokkaido, about
700 miles north of Tokyo, when it was smashed against the breakwater
and split in half, they said.
of the ship's 16 crew were later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital,
the officials said. One crew member was missing and the remaining nine
were injured, they added.
